Description of Learning

This unit was challenging, yet enjoyable. Before I took this unit, I knew nothing about the composition, and as an infant, I learned step by step. First, I carefully read about the composition. As I started to get some ideas, I started to search for examples, which clarified the explanations of compositions.  I right away grabbed my camera and started to shoot photos. During my practice, I tried to use my learning and changed my settings frequently. I tried my best to take good photos in great angles with the use of compositions. However, it didn't go fluently as I thought it would be. Although my photos were interesting with good compositions, most of my photos were blurry because my hands were trembling really hard. This problem was soon solved by Mr. Tahan’s advices. He told me to use faster shutter speed, and if the lighting does not go well with fast shutter speed, use tripod to settle the camera. Using his advices supported me to take better photos.

Researched Notes and Images

I found helpful online sources

This site helps users to get better understanding on lines that are used in photography, and the ways to develop line photographs. It supported me to use lines efficiently throughout the project.

I found images from dpreview challenges (http://www.dpreview.com/challenges/)

Aperture: F16
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/4sec
I found this image of a tunnel with curved and converged lines. The photographer used converged lines to give an effect on viewers’ eyes to focus into the picture other than out. This gave a greater impact on the photo. Also, curved lines contributed to the sensual feeling. My eyes go inside the tunnel as well, and I feel like the tunnel is absorbing me. The photographer used aperture of f/16, ISO 100, and 1/4 sec shutter speed. By using a small aperture, the photographer was able to focus on a wide range of tunnel, while by using slow shutter speed, he or she was able to get the right lightening.
This photo was taken on April 24, 2008. The scene of this image is a headlight that was taken in a very close distance and has very geometric figures with peaceful feel of colors. The camera that the photographer used was  Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT  with Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM lens. The photographer does not mention which aperture, shutter speed, and ISO he or she used, but I can assume he or she used shallow depth of field with large aperture, because from the picture, I can observe that the picture is only focused on the one point and the rest of them are blurry. Also, obviously, using wide aperture lens will make shallow depth of field. I think the photographer decided to use a wide aperture with shallow depth of field because it makes the picture more soothing, while it is interesting and busy. By using these effects, the photographer gives the great example of texture.
The title of the piece is” Chain texture” from the artist, hajeka. This photo was taken at the artist house on Apr 7, 2007.  The scene of this image is a watch chain with clear textures, which have rough surfaces that give strong feelings. This photo was taken in a very close distance. The photographer used aperture of f/9, ISO 100, and 1/15 sec shutter speed. This artist purposely used f/9 as an aperture because he or she wanted to focus on the large range of photo, which worked well. Also, the artist converted to black and white photo with resizing and sharpening to make the photo more interesting and effective.
